The CEFR Companion Volume (CV) (2020) has reshaped our understanding of the foreign language student when it advocates the view of the learner as a 'social agent' who uses language(s) to interact with others. To support this view, the CEFR CV promotes new dynamic categories to describe language competences; reception, production, interaction and mediation. This shift to learner agency naturally requires adjustment from the part of the teacher, too. Presumably, it is the concept of mediation that has puzzled teachers most. This is why the authors of the Companion Volume have now provided a detailed explanation of mediation and its application; examples of how we all naturally use it in every-day communication. They have explained specific activities and strategies, among others mediating a text, mediating concepts, and mediating communication. In this article, we focus on assessment of mediation. We describe tasks that we use in our practice to assess our students' ability to mediate a text through examples from the English for Specific/Academic Purposes (e.g., Medical English, Business English) offered at the University of Oulu. In addition, we discuss potential difficulties and opportunities when creating mediation assessment tasks especially when we consider disciplinary, linguistic, and cultural differences. No publisherEmilia Rajalalinguistic mediationlanguage assessmenthigher educationassessmentkkyenglanti2023/05/10 06:16:00 GMT+2Sivu“The thing… is kinda complicated”: What and how do you assess in CLIL?

“Every teacher is a language teacher” has almost become a mantra in educational systems throughout the world. However, what does it mean in practice? If language learning and teaching is a part of any classroom, how do you teach and assess both content and language simultaneously? This question inspired a collaboration of teachers and researchers from all around the world which we reflect on in this paper. No publisherCLILcontent and language integrationlanguage assessmentlanguage learninglanguage teachingkkyenglanti2021/02/10 16:02:00 GMT+2SivuDigiTala research project: Automatic speech recognition in assessing L2 speaking

In this article, we discuss the premise of assessing oral language skills with the help of automatic speech recognition. We present the main goals and working methods in DigiTala project (2019–2023) – a research project between University of Helsinki, Aalto University and University of Jyväskylä that aims at developing a digital tool for assessing and practicing oral language skills. Ultimately, this digital tool would enable implementing tasks measuring oral skills into the language tests of the Matriculation Examination. No publisherSanna Riuttanenautomatic speech recognitionoral skillslanguage assessmentcomputer-assisted testinghigh-stakes testautomaattinen puheentunnistussuullinen kielitaitokielitaidon arviointidigitaalinen ylioppilastutkintokielikoeKKYenglanti2020/06/10 07:35:00 GMT+2Sivu
