Call for Papers - Kieli, koulutus ja yhteiskunta (Language, Education and Society) (December 2026)
Fostering participation through multilingualism is the theme for 2025-2026 for The Finnish Network for Language Education Policies (Kieliverkosto). The December 2026 thematic issue of the online journal Kieli, koulutus ja yhteiskunta (Language, Education and Society) is dedicated to the theme.
The thematic issue will be published in December 2026 (week 50).
Kieliverkosto invites popularized texts on research results, teaching experiments, good practices and experiences from projects, and the latest language education policy decisions and their backgrounds. We welcome article proposals broadly related to multilingualism and fostering participation. Examples of article topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Language supporting, challenging or preventing participation
- Overt or latent multilingualism of individuals
- Emotions of individuals or communities considering language or multilingualism (e.g. joy of learning, courage to use a language despite one’s skill level or overcoming shame related to one’s language skills)
- The effect of political changes and hardening attitudes towards different languages and to the appreciation of language teaching
- Regional segregation of language teaching and unequal opportunities to learn languages
- The generational gaps in studying languages and multilingualism
- The growing differences in reading skills and how they affect participation
- Multilingual and language-aware practices fostering equity in different communities (e.g. workplaces and educational institutions)
If you are interested in proposing an article to the thematic issue, please contact Kieliverkosto by September 25th at the latest. In your message, tell us about your article idea and the possible structure of the article. If your article is accepted, the actual hand-in date for the articles is October 30th. Some of the articles that were not accepted might be published in the online journal in 2027.
Kieli, koulutus ja yhteiskunta (Language, Education and Society) is an open online journal edited by Kieliverkosto. The articles of the online journal cover different areas of language education. The journal is a low-threshold publishing platform which brings together researchers, language policy decision-makers, teachers, and others working in the field. The texts in the e-journal are mainly written in Finnish, Swedish or English. You are, however, welcome to propose an article written in some other language: the editorial staff considers if the article can be edited in your chosen language.
We are looking forward to your inspiring article ideas!
